Salary: £30,000

 

Hours: Full time

 

Term: 12 months – with possibility to extend dependent on funding 

 

Location: Dundee Museum of Transport, Unit 10, Market Mews, Market Street, Dundee. DD1 3LA (role will transfer to the Maryfield Tram Depot on completion of the museum’s restoration project)

Job Summary

Dundee Museum of Transport is seeking a new Curator. This role is suited to someone looking to take the next step in their curatorial career, offering a unique opportunity to build on their expertise in collections care, museum accreditation, and project management. The Curator will be responsible for the care, conservation, and interpretation of the museum’s transportation collection, focusing on re-securing Accredited Museum status and coordinating the relocation of the museum’s collection to the newly renovated Maryfield Tram Depot site – a move that is expected to take place in early 2027.  

 

This role combines hands-on collections management with the chance to lead a significant logistical project, providing valuable experience in both operational and strategic curatorial practices. While over twelve months away it is anticipated that the new postholder will have a primary focus on preparing for the Maryfield move from their arrival date. â€‹â€‹â€‹

Key Responsibilities

  • Exhibition and Interpretation: Develop engaging and accessible exhibitions and interpretative content to enhance the educational and cultural value of the collection – a focus on shaping the new Maryfield exhibition will be an early priority.

  • Relocation Project: Oversee the planning and execution of the collection’s move to the Maryfield Tram Depot, maintaining high standards of collections care throughout the transition and ensuring minimal risk to objects.

  • Manage new object acquisition and accessioning and necessary deaccessioning and disposals.

​

  • Manage object loan process for the Maryfield project.

​

  • Collections Care: Manage and preserve the museum’s collection, implementing best practices in documentation, conservation, storage, and handling to ensure long-term preservation.

  • Accreditation: Support the museum’s reaccreditation process by implementing necessary documentation, policies, and procedures that meet professional standards.

​

  • Stakeholder Collaboration: Work closely with museum departments, community partners, and other stakeholders to support the museum’s goals and ensure a seamless transition to the new site.

Qualifications

A degree in museum studies, history, or a related field, with foundational experience in collections care, project coordination, and knowledge of museum accreditation standards. This role offers an excellent opportunity for someone to deepen their experience in both collections management and project leadership.
