Dundee Museum of Transport will mark the 70th anniversary of Dundee’s last tram journey in 2026 with the creation of a new exhibition that celebrates the city’s rich tram heritage. The exhibition will capture photography, moving images, artefacts and the stories of those who worked and travelled on them. We need your help to raise a minimum of £25,000 to turn our plans for this new exhibition into a reality. Our new Home

A massive thank you to everyone who supported our Crowdfunder campaign to raise funds to restore the damaged bricks at Maryfield Tram Depot.

Since the launch in mid November over 500 supporters have helped us raise just over £34,000 including Gift Aid which will all go towards the restoration work to create a permanent home for Dundee Museum of Transport.

The 1969 Fiat 500F represents one of the most important chapters in Italian motoring history. By the late 1960s, the Fiat 500 had already become a familiar sight across Italy, providing simple, affordable transport for millions and helping to put the nation on wheels.

Introduced in 1965, the 500F marked a key evolution of the model. It featured front-hinged doors rather than the earlier rear-hinged “suicide doors”, improving safety and practicality while retaining the unmistakable charm that made the 500 so popular.

Powered by a small rear-mounted engine, the 500F was designed for everyday life in Italian towns and cities. Its compact size made it ideal for narrow streets and tight parking spaces, while its simplicity kept running costs low and maintenance straightforward.

By 1969, the Fiat 500 was firmly established as a cultural icon as much as a car. It became associated with freedom, independence and a changing Italy, appearing everywhere from city streets to countryside villages.

Today, the 1969 Fiat 500F is celebrated as a design classic. Small in stature but huge in character, it captures the spirit of Italian ingenuity and remains one of the most loved cars ever produced.

Bought from London Transport in 1956 and scrapped in 1969, it formed part of a significant influx of vehicles brought north to support Dundee’s growing network.

Captured by our future home at Maryfield Tram Depot on Forfar Road, the image offers a rare glimpse into the working environment of one of Dundee’s most important transport hubs, long before its current regeneration story began.

The 1961 Isetta is one of the most instantly recognisable vehicles of the post-war era, famous for its compact size, distinctive bubble shape and front-opening door. Designed to provide affordable mobility at a time when Europe was rebuilding, it quickly became a symbol of ingenuity and practicality.

Originally developed in Italy, the Isetta was created to bridge the gap between motorcycles and full-sized cars. Its clever design allowed two adults to sit side by side, with the steering wheel and controls swinging outwards as the door opened, making entry and exit part of the experience.

Powered by a small engine and built for efficiency rather than speed, the Isetta was perfectly suited to narrow streets and crowded cities. Its lightweight construction and excellent fuel economy made it an appealing choice during a period when resources were limited and practicality mattered more than performance.

By 1961, the Isetta had become an icon of microcar culture, representing a very different approach to motoring than the larger, more powerful cars of the time. While modest in size, its impact on automotive design and urban transport was anything but small.

Today, the Isetta is celebrated as a design classic, admired for its charm, creativity and unmistakable character. Seeing one up close offers a glimpse into a moment in history when innovation came in the smallest of packages.

Once filled with trams heading out across the city, this space played a quiet but vital role in how Dundee moved, worked and grew. Generations passed through here without a second thought, yet it sat at the heart of everyday life.

Today, Maryfield stands as a reminder of that shared history – and of the stories still held within its walls.

As this building prepares for its next chapter, its past continues to guide what comes next.

🚗🇮🇹 Meet the cars of La Dolce Dundee: Speed, Style and Italian Spirit

This charming 1972 Fiat 500 began life in Sardinia, where it was originally registered new and affectionately named Carolina by its first and only owner there. By the time it left Italy, the car had covered just 17,000km (10,500 miles) from new.

In 2000, Carolina made an unforgettable journey to the UK, driven the entire distance from Sardinia. The trip covered 1,055 miles in 33 hours, at an average speed of 31mph while achieving an impressive 63mpg - a true test of both car and driver.

Now in the UK, the current owners became the third custodians in 2020 and carried out a careful restoration. While some upgrades may not please the purists, they’ve made the car far more usable while allowing its age and character to show through naturally.

Originally upgraded to a 700cc engine producing around 50hp, the car later suffered a mechanical failure near the end of a long charity run from Fife to RAF Lossiemouth. That chapter led to the next evolution in its story.

Today, the Fiat 500 runs a 650cc engine from a Fiat 126, paired with a synchro gearbox that removes the need for double de-clutching. With additions like a stainless sports exhaust, electronic ignition, improved brakes and suspension, it remains charming to look at while being far more confident on the road.

🚍📖 From the archive today is a Dundee Corporation single decker, Fleet Number 22 (CYJ315), an AEC Regal IV with Alexander bodywork. New in 1953 and withdrawn in 1974, it served Dundee for over two decades.

Captured nearside at East Dock Street depot, the bus is shown operating Route 14, reflecting the vital role single deckers played across the city’s network.

The museum is now open from 10am to 4.30pm, Friday to Monday.

The Alfa Romeo Arna was produced between 1983 and 1987, during a period when Alfa Romeo was searching for stability and a stronger foothold in the small family car market. To achieve this, Alfa entered into a partnership with Nissan, creating one of the most unusual collaborations in automotive history.

The aim was to blend Japanese manufacturing reliability with Alfa Romeo’s engineering expertise. Built in Italy, the Arna was based on the Nissan Cherry, with Alfa Romeo engines and running gear fitted beneath the surface. On paper, it made sense. In reality, the combination struggled to win over buyers.

The styling was widely criticised for lacking Alfa Romeo’s trademark flair, while the mechanical components failed to deliver the reliability many expected from the partnership. As a result, the Arna quickly gained a reputation that overshadowed its original ambition.

Today, the Alfa Romeo Arna is remembered not as a success story, but as a fascinating experiment. Its rarity and backstory have helped it gain cult status among enthusiasts, making it an important reminder that motoring history is shaped as much by bold risks as it is by iconic triumphs.

🚗🏭 Did you know Dundee once built its own car?

The Werbell was a short-lived but fascinating motor car manufactured right here in Dundee in the early 20th century.

Built by the Werbell Motor Car Company, it’s a reminder that the city’s engineering story goes far beyond jute, jam and journalism.

While the Werbell never went into large-scale production, it represents a bold moment when Dundee was experimenting with new industries and technologies – including the rapidly emerging world of motoring.

You can spot a scale model of the Werbell in the museum, a small but mighty link to a time when Dundee briefly joined the race to build Britain’s next great car.

🚌❤️ We are 6 days away from reopening the doors to the Dundee Museum of Transport, and the countdown is well and truly on as we get ready to welcome visitors back for another season.

One of our newest additions and already a firm favourite, our Dundee Corporation bus tells a powerful story of everyday life in the city – the journeys, routines and moments that once filled Dundee’s streets.

🚨💸 MAJOR ANNOUNCEMENT: We’re delighted to announce that the Dundee Museum of Transport has secured a £1.5 million additional funding boost, taking the total support from the Dundee’s Community Regeneration Partnership support for the Maryfield project to £2.7 million.

This new funding sits alongside £1 million previously awarded by the Scottish Government, bringing confirmed public investment in the project to £3.7 million and allowing the transformation of the historic Maryfield Tram Depot to move into the delivery phase.

The additional funding means refurbishment work can now begin. A main contractor will be appointed to carry out restoration, conservation and fit-out works to the 1901 and 1913 sections of the building, which will form the core of the new museum.

These works are expected to take around 12 months to complete and will deliver a building ready to welcome visitors.

Redevelopment of the wider Maryfield site will continue in stages, supporting sustainable growth over time.

The museum has been based at Market Mews since 2014, operating from temporary premises while plans for a permanent home were developed.

The move to Maryfield will finally provide the space and setting needed to tell Dundee’s transport story on a much larger scale.

Alongside this funding, we will continue fundraising to support later phases of the project, including landscaping, new permanent exhibitions, and restoration of the 1920 section of the building.

Subject to continued fundraising success, we are working towards opening our new home in the first half of 2027.

Captured nearside on Dock Street, Dundee, the bus is displaying Route 15 to Whitfield, a key northern route serving one of the city’s largest residential areas.

Scenes like this were once a familiar part of Dundee’s everyday streetscape.

🚍🛍️ We have been so fortunate to receive hundreds upon hundreds of new photographs that we have been able to add to our collections and share with you all!

The last one we’re sharing this year is this Tayside Regional Council Volvo Ailsa (LES48P), Fleet Number 111, shows the clean lines typical of mid-1970s bus design. New in 1976 and withdrawn in 1988, it carries the familiar Route 10 destination board to Barnhill. Here you can see shoppers boarding the bus on Dundee’s High Street.

Scenes like this were once a daily part of Dundee city centre life.

🚍💛 Here we have Fleet Number 79 (A79 SSP), a Tayside Volvo Ailsa with East Lancs bodywork, instantly recognisable thanks to its bright all-over Taybus Passes advert. New in 1983 and withdrawn in 1999, it represents the colourful advertising era of Dundee’s fleet.

Photographed nearside at East Dock Street depot, it’s displaying Route 2 to the City Centre – a core Dundee route still used today.

🚌💛 Today’s featured photo shows a yellow Tayside Regional Council dedicated double decker training bus, Fleet Number T1 (WTS271T).

Originally new in 1979 as standard service bus 271, this Volvo Ailsa with Alexander bodywork was transferred to the training fleet in 1983, where it helped prepare countless new drivers for the roads of Dundee.

Captured nearside at East Dock Street depot, it’s a great example of how older vehicles were repurposed to support the next generation of transport staff, extending their working life in a vital behind-the-scenes role.

🚂🌁 Today we remember the 75 people who lost their lives in the Tay Bridge Disaster on 28 December 1879.

146 years on, we reflect on one of the darkest moments in Dundee’s history and honour all those who were lost.

🚌❤️ Today’s photo spotlights a red and white Highland Scottish double decker – a reminder that Scotland’s bus history is wonderfully varied and interconnected.

Vehicles like this served rural and long-distance routes, contrasting with Dundee’s mainly urban fleet.

It’s a lovely addition to our winter photo series, showing how transport across Scotland evolved through different operators and regions.

The museum is closed until February, but we’ll keep sharing new unseen images from the collection throughout winter.

✨🚌 This postcard-style pairing presents two Dundee favourites from different eras. First is Tayside Regional Council Fleet Number 88 (AYJ88B), a Daimler Fleetline with Alexander bodywork showing Route 28 to Douglas.

Alongside it is preserved Dundee Transport Corporation Fleet Number 127 (AYJ379), a 1951 Daimler CVD6 with Croft bodywork, displaying Route 13 to Camperdown. Between them, they show just how quickly bus design evolved in the mid-20th century.

We’re closed until February, but these archive pieces help keep Dundee’s transport story alive all winter.

🚍❤️ This terrific line-up shows several Tayside double deckers gathered at East Dock Street depot. Among them are PYJ136, OTS271, KSA179P (ex-Grampian), and DSP932V, with fleet numbers including 89, 90 and 32.

These Volvo Citybuses and Ailsas, built between the late 1970s and mid-1980s, were key workhorses in Dundee’s fleet before their withdrawals in the 1990s and early 2000s.
